의문문

기본 규칙

동사 외에 다른 동사가 있을 경우

• be동사, 완료형의 have, 기타 조동사들과 주어의 위치를 서로 바꿈
  • You are going home.
    • → Are you going home?
  • Ryan will be here soon.
    • → Will Ryan be here soon?
  • You can swim.
    • → Can you swim?

일반동사만 있을 경우

• do의 도움을 받아 동사 대신 주어 앞으로 이동
• do는 일종의 조동사이므로, 동사는 원형이어야 함
  • You know Ryan Jeong.
    • → Do you know Ryan Jeong?
  • Ryan loves baseball.
    • → Does Ryan love baseball?
  • He studied last night.
    • → Did he study last night?

대답

• No일 때는 주어와 동사 부분을 축약해서 대답해도 됨
• Yes일 때는 축약하면 안 됨
  • Are you going home?
    • → Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
  • Will Ryan be here soon?
    • → Yes, he will. / No, he won’t.
  • Can you swim?
    • → Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
  • Do you know Ryan Jeong?
    • → Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
  • Does Ryan love baseball?
    • → Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t
  • Did he study list night?
    • → Yes, he did. / No, he didn’t

의문사가 있는 의문문

• 6하원칙에 해당하는 영어 단어들
  • when, where, who, what, how, why
• ‘의문사 + 동사 + 주어’
• Yes / No 의문문에서 앞에 의문사만 하나 더 추가한 꼴
  • Does he live in Seoul?
    • → Where does he live? (in Seoul을 몰라서 물어볼 때)
  • Will you graduate next year?
    • → When will you graduate? (next year를 몰라서 물어볼 때)
  • Is your brother at home?
    • → Where is your brother? (at home을 몰라서 물어볼 때)
  • I saw something.
    • → What did you see? (something을 몰라서 물어볼 때)
  • Someone left the door open.
    • → Who left the door open? (someone을 몰라서 물어볼 때)
  • Something happened.
    • → What happened? (something을 몰라서 물어볼 때)

평서문을 올려 읽어라

• 평서문의 끝을 올려 읽으면 의문문의 효과를 냄
  • 이미 답을 알고 있는 상태에서 확인할 목적으로
  • 놀라움을 표시할 목적으로
    • You’re coming with us tonight?
    • That’s your girlfriend? I think I’ve seen her before.

맞장구

• 누가 말한 것을 다시 한 번 확인하기 위함
  • A: I’m getting married.

  • B: You’re getting married?

  • A: Take a look at this.

  • B: Take a look at what?

  • A: She passed the test.

  • B: She did what?

  • A: I’m going to Japan next month.

  • B: You’re going where?

  • A: I like the girl over there.

  • B: Do you?

  • A: I had a lovely weekend.
  • B: Did you?

부가의문문

• 긍정과 부정을 바꿈
  • 원래 문장이 긍정문이면, 부가의문문은 부정문으로
• 원래 문장의 동사가 일반동사이면, do의 도움을 받음
• 원래 문장의 시제와 부가의문문의 시제는 같음
  • You don’t like this, do you?
  • You know him, don't you?
  • He is your brother, isn't he?
  • Ryan can play the guitar, can't he?

  • You didn’t drive the car, did you?

  • It’s no good, is it?
  • There’s little you can do about it, is there?
  • You seldom work on Sundays, do you?
